Why print, in 2026

Autodesk publishes excellent documentation, and it is reorganised roughly every time somebody at Autodesk changes job titles. A printed reference freezes a coherent mental model of the software at a moment in time, which is exactly what you want while learning and exactly what you do not want when hunting a specific dialog. Buy print to learn the model tree; keep the web docs open for keyboard shortcuts.

The four books below split cleanly by intent. One is an AI-assisted workflow book written in German. One is a 700-page classroom reference. One is a maker-shop primer. One is not a Fusion book at all but the machining handbook that makes the CAM chapters of the others make sense.

Autodesk Fusion 360: A Power Guide for Beginners and Career Professionals (7th Edition), by Sandeep Dogra for CADArtifex, is the book to work through if you want coverage rather than narrative. It is an English paperback of roughly 730 pages, organised as tutorials with end-of-chapter exercises, and it is the closest thing to a textbook in this category.

The catch is the edition treadmill. The 6th Edition is still widely stocked and still shows the previous ribbon layout, which will confuse a beginner within twenty minutes. If the cover does not say 7th Edition, do not buy it.

Fusion 360 for Makers, 2nd Edition by Lydia Sloan Cline (Make Community) is 320 pages of English paperback aimed squarely at people who own a 3D printer or a laser cutter and want parts out the door this weekend. Eight projects, all printable, and the clearest explanation of Fusion component-versus-body confusion that we have read anywhere.

This is a beginner book and it does not pretend otherwise. There is no CAM chapter worth the name. Pair it with the handbook below if you are heading toward a mill.

The shop-floor handbook

Machinery’s Handbook, 32nd Edition, Toolbox (Erik Oberg, Franklin D. Jones, Holbrook L. Horton and Henry H. Ryffel, Industrial Press) is a 3,000-page hardcover and the reason your CAM setup sheet asks for a surface feed rate you do not recognise. It is not a Fusion book. It is the book that makes the Fusion CAM workspace legible.

Industrial Press sells this content in several physically different objects, and the differences matter more than usual:
